Surviving Comics: A Documentary Journeying into Comic Book Culture

To celebrate this enduring love affair, Driven Films is thrilled to announce the commencement of production on an independent, feature-length documentary titled "Surviving Comics."
A Marvelous Start in Maitland, Florida
Our journey into the enthralling world of comics began in May 2023, as we stepped into the welcoming embrace of Blackbird Comics & Coffeehouse in Maitland, Florida to begin our first round of interviews for the documentary.
This charming haven, where coffee meets comics, served as our inaugural filming location. Nestled amongst shelves brimming with graphic novels and collectibles, we immersed ourselves in the passion of local comic book enthusiasts, hearing their stories and capturing the essence of this unique space.
If you’re in the Orlando area, you definitely need to stop by Blackbird to grab an amazing coffee…in fact, our Director’s favorite drink at Blackbird is the “Sublime” but you’ll want to try them all. Be sure to pick up a few books while you’re there!
A Cross-Country Odyssey
As our cameras continued to roll, our quest for the heart of comics led us far and wide. We embarked on an adventure that took us beyond state lines, delving into the diverse landscape of comic book shops. Among these treasures, Dr. No's Comics & Games in Georgia, St. Marks Comics, and Anyone Comics in Brooklyn, New York, opened their doors to us. We were greeted by not only the shelves full of comics but also by the fervor of their dedicated patrons, each with their own tale to tell about their comic book journeys.
Our first stop in New York was a small and cozy comic shop by the name of “Anyone Comics”.
While interviewing Metropolis Collectibles CEO and Founder, Vincent Zurzolo, we got to see some of the most legendary comic books first-hand, like this copy of Amazing Fantasy #15!
An Epic Encounter with Legendary Comics
One of the highlights of our expedition was the privilege of interviewing none other than Vincent Zurzolo, the owner of Metropolis Collectibles.
In a jaw-dropping experience, Mr. Zurzolo personally guided us through his legendary showroom, where priceless treasures awaited. Our cameras bore witness to history as we gazed upon comics that have left an indelible mark on pop culture.
Among the treasures were the iconic Amazing Fantasy #15, which marked the debut of Spider-Man, and Detective Comics #27, where Batman first made his appearance. These comics, once mere printed pages, have transcended into cultural icons, and our documentary aims to capture the magic that surrounds them.
